The geometric thinking levels of primary grade 5 students and the effect of geometry teaching with discovery learning on geometric thinking levels of students

The aim of the research is to identify the geometric thinking levels of the students? in terms of different variables and the effect of the geometry teaching with discovery learning on the students? geometric thinking levels. To target this aim, descriptive and experimental research were designed.The sample of the study consisted 1644 fifth grade student live in central district of İzmir city. To identify the geometric thinking levels of the students? Geometric Thinking Level Identify Test which developed by the researcher was applied. The students? geometric thinking levels were analyzed in terms of different variables such as gender, use ofcomputer, to get pre-school education, sosyo economic status of the schools environment, parents education level, parents working situation. Although the right answers that students give to the questions were analyzed in terms the concepts. The experimental part of the research was conducted with 107 students. The lectures were instructed by discovery teaching to the experiment group and the lectures were instructed with the books of Ministery of National Education to the control group.The data were analyzed by FINESSE and SPSS 11.0 programme. Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, analysis of variance and t-test were used for analysis of the data. If F values were significiant, Scheffe test would be applied to find out the origin of difference among groups.Based on the analysis students? geometric thinking levels differ in terms of gender, use ofcomputer, to get pre-school education, sosyo economic status of the schools environment, parents education level, parents working situation variables. Although the students? achievment was beter at two dimensional concepts. The experiment group?s geometric thinking levels were statistically different than the control group.
