To Determıne The Estımate Strategıes In Maths Fıeld For The Prımary School Studens of 6th-8th Grades AndThe Relatıon Between The Estımate Abılıty AndSuccess For MathsThe objective of this study was to determine the estimate strategies in maths field for the primary school students of 6th - 8th grades and to examine the relation between estimate ability and success for mathematics.The research included 1621 students from 20 different primary schools chosen randomly in 2006-2007 Education Year, 18 of them were state schools and 2 of them were private schools.In this study, which aimed to determine the estimate strategies in maths field for primary school students of 6th-8th grades and to evaluate the relation between estimate ability and success for maths, some quantitative reseach methods were used to determine the levels of estimate ability of students and also some qualitative research methods were used to learn the strategies preferred by students during estimation problems.The independent variations which were thought to have an effect on the estimate ability of students were obtained by using a ?Personal Information Form?. ?Estimate Ability Test? including 32 questions and developed by the researhcer was applied to determine the levels of estimate ability of students.Subject analysis was carried out for the validity of the ?Estimate Ability Test? developed in this study. Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was found as 0.74.12 estimate strategies, used by primary school maths students of 6th- 8th grades, were defined in the findings of the study. These strategies were estimate depending on the existing knowledge and experience, visualizing, decomposition, comparison, estimation through experiments, rounding, accomodating, distribution, using the front-end orders, grouping, mental calculation and randomly made estimates. The other result of the study is that the students whose success level for maths is high also has a high level of estimate skills. In addition to these results, sex and grades of students are within the factors affecting the estimate ability.Keywords: Estimation, Estimation Ability, Estimation Strategies.
