Analysis of the primary school 7th grade students? levels of reading compherension in terms of various variables

In the academic year 2005-2006, instruction schedules based on constructive approach were implemented in the Turkish National Education system. The student centred system was adopted in constructivism, which is a modern approach. Constructivism is a cognition based learning approach which takes shape as a result of ? the intellectual cognition? of the individual. This approach centers more on the notion ? learning?, than on the notion ? teaching?.The target of this study is to determine ? The Readiness Level in Reading Comprehension of 7th Grade Primary School Students?. The descriptive scanning method was utilized in our study, and a personal data form - developed by the researcher- which was arranged for determining the demographic specialities of the students was used together with the achievement test arranged for 7th grade Turkish lessons. 1162 students of the 7th grade of primary schools of varying socio-economic levels, in the districts and central district of Elazığ were topic to the research for a period of three weeks in the academic year 2010-2011. The assessment instrument was composed of 25 multi- choice questions. The Cronbach?s Alpha reliability co-efficient of the test was 0,90. The data derived during the study were analyzed with the t test and the Variance analysis.The following results were obtained after the The Readiness Level in Reading Comprehension of 7th Grade Primary School Students was examined:?In favour of female students when the gender of the students was compared,?In favour of the ones who don?t go to multigrade classes when a related comparison was made,?In favour of kindergarten pupils when they were compared with pupils who didn?t go to the kindergarten,?In favour of mobile education students when a related comparison was materialized,?In favour of students who hadn?t changed teachers when compared with students who had changed their teachers,?In favour of younger students when ages were compared,?In favour of the ones who live in the central district when their dwelling places were compared,?In favour of the ones who live in houses with four rooms when their houses were compared,?In favour of the ones who had a study room in their house when such a comparison was materialized,?In favour of the ones who read books every day, when a comparison was made in reading periods,?In favour of users of devices like TV and PCs used for knowledge acquisition when a related comparison was materialized,?In favour of the ones whose family has a higher income, when a related comparison was carried out,?A significant difference was observed when a comparison was materialized between the educational level of the parents of the students; this was in favour of the ones whose parents were on a higher educational level.Key words: Comprehension, Readiness, Reading Comprehension.
