Evaluation of 2006 English language program for seventh grade according to teachers? opinions

This study is focused to evaluate new English programme in 7th classes in primary schools according to teachers? opinions. With this aim the questionnaire developed by the researchers have been applied to 152 of 180 teachers working at primary schools in Ankara Altındağ town in 2011-2012 education year. This study is descriptive to determine the opinion of teachers, data collecting means has been developed by the researchers related to the opinion of the adviser and experts.Frequency (f), percentage (%) and arithmetic mean( X ) of data collected have been found by the help of survey The results attained from the analysis have been interpreted by using the tables. It has been seen that although the participant English language teachers have moderately positive opinions on the components of the program, they still think that there are inefficient points of Elementary School Seventh Grade English Language Teaching Program that need to be revised and developed. The participant English language teachers think that the statements of aims are clear and easy to understand but they think that the aims within the 7th grade English curriculum aren?t suitable for students? cognitive and psychomotor development. It has been observed that content isn?t suitable for students to use phrases or expressions in daily life, time isn?t sufficient and content isn?t suitable for students to do research although it has been emphasized in the curriculum. In addition, the participant English language teachers think that content doesn?t improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It has been observed that the activities make it possible for students to attend the class actively but class size hinders the implementation of the curriculum, necessary materials such as CD player, DVD player and projector aren?t easily accessible and authentic materials aren?t used. Finally, it has been observed that the curriculum recommends measurement and assessment techniques and methods that are consistent with the aims according to the participant teachers but time isn?t sufficient for the participants to use alternative assessment techniques and performance and project tasks aren?t suitable for students to improve the students?creativity in addition to that these tasks don?t enable the students to adapt their knowledge and abilities in English to the real life.
