Determination of 8th grade students knowledge levels about sound

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research study was to determine the 8th grade students? knowledge level on sound subject and sound concepts. The study was conducted in 2011-2012 school year with a total of 240 eighth-grade students (116 female and 124 male students) attending the Arif Nihat Asya Elementary School located in Istanbul. An achievement test consisting of 20 questions was used to determine the students? knowledge level of sound subject. Each answer that the students gave in the test was descriptively analyzed and interpreted. The results of the analysis demonstrated that 8th grade students had many misconceptions or wrong information about sound subject and sound concepts. Even though the results of the study showed similarities with the ones in the literature, some new findings not mentioned in the literature before were also found. Furthermore, the study yielded a statistically significant result among six eighth grade classes participated in the study in terms of knowledge level between the male and female students. At the end of the study, some suggestions were made with respect to the misconceptions and students? limited knowledge about the subject.Keywords: Sound, Sound Concepts, Frequency, Intensity, Science and Technology
