Evaluating of estimation skill of the elemantary school fifth grade mathematic course program in terms of teachers? views

In this research, the aim is to analyze evaluating of estimation skill of the elementary school fifth year mathematic course program in term of teachers? views. The study also aims at developing suggestions in line with teachers? perspectives about acquisition of estimation skill.In this research, a descriptive study was designed as a cross hatching model. There were two techniques used for data collection; which were quantitative and qualitative methods. To begin with, an example of the quantitative research was done in Diyarbakır, in the 2009?2010 of academic year. There were two hundred twenty instructors, teaching the fifth grade and they worked at fifty two elementary schools. The schools were chosen by grouping method. Then, fifty two elementary schools were chosen by the survey. Among those, nine of them was decided as they were easily accessible.In this research, questionnaire forms which were developed by the researcher were used as data gathering instrument. There were three sections. The first section included five questions about personal information about participants. The second section had twenty two questions about earning skill of the estimation (acquisition, activities, methods and techniques, tools, measurement and evaluation) which were included in the mathematic course program. The last section had thirteen questions about acquiring skills of the estimation, aiming to investigate teachers? point of views.The semi-structured interview form including eight questions was developed by the researcher. The interview questions were based on estimation skill; attainment, student activities for acquiring these skills, the changes that estimation skill made on students, on mathematic course and on the classroom atmosphere.Under the direction of the aims of the resarch, those were set that are dissociations of frequency, percentage and mean regarding the opinions of those participants in the application about the estimation skill which is the subject of the research. Descriptive analysis was conducted on the qualitative data.The result of the study showed that teachers said that with activity of estimation skills students learnt to defend self-opinions and they accepted mistakes of self-opinions. Teachers also said that with estimation activities students like mathematic lesson then before. Teachers thought that estimation skills increased students? self-confidence and helped them to develop their expression skills through interrogating, criticizing, interpreting visuals. The teachers explained that they usually experienced difficulty equipment/class materials and socio-economic status differences among students during their implementation of estimation skill activities.Keywords: Estimation of mathematic, Estimation Ability, Estimation Strategies
