Computer teachers opinions and expectations related to the primary school computer syllabus: A case study, Çanakkale city sample

The aim of this research is to define the opinions and expectations of teachers workingin Çanakkale, related to the primary school computer syllabus. What are the teachers opinionsabout the aims, content, learning and teaching procces and evaluation elements of primaryschool computer syllabus. What are the problems of teachers faced with the process oflearning and teaching in primary computer lessons. What are the suggestions and options ofteachers regarding to the improvement of primary computer syllabus. This research isimportant on the view of getting the necessary improvements and solving the problems facedwith computer teaching by creating on opportunity to evaluate the applicance of the syllabus.The research was applied in a qualitative research method and was designed as a casestudy. In order to gather the data, an interview form regarding to the computer teachers wasprepared and used. The sample of the study includes teachers who work in the primaryschools, located in the city center and its town of Canakkale in 2006-2007. The interviewswere type recorded and transmitted written form by the researcher. The general categories ofthe research that are the themes were defined and the coding was done according to thestructure.The findings of the research were interprete according to the defined themes andearlier defined sub-problems. In the light of these findings, it is seen that the primary schoolcomputer syllabus is insufficient and there are some problems in the usage of the syllabus.The factors that have taken part in forming the troubles were discussed in details in the thirdsection.As a result, the teachers who interviewed have the similar opinion. They havesuggested to develop the curriculum, to increase the time period of the course and to be metthe hardware and software needs of high-tech classroom.Key Words: Computer Lesson, Primary School, Computer Teaching, Syllabus,Opinions of Teachers.
