The suitability of the illustrations in primary education first class textbooks to the designing principles and the students level of perception

ABSTRACK ?THE SUITABILITY OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION FIRST CLASS TEXTBOOKS TO THE DESIGNING PRINCIPLES AND THE STUDENTS? LEVEL OF PERCEPTION? Liman, Seda Master of Arts, Discipline of Fine Arts Education Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Guler Akalan 2007 In this research, primary education 1st level textbook illustrations are evaluated according to designing principles and students? level of perception. This study employs a qualitative research design and in terms of research type, it belongs to the ?basic research? group. The purpose of the research is to supplement the present knowledge on the subject. Since a situation is evaluated within its own conditions and form of existence, this research is consistent with ?review model?. The universe of the research is composed of the illustrations of primary education textbooks which are approved by the Ministry of Education. The sample group, which is based on proportional set-sampling method, consists of the illustrations of the primary education music textbooks, approved by the Ministry of Education, which are still on use in 2005-2006 education year. The illustrations are evaluated by a jury of scholars. Briefly, the conclusions as summarized in articles are that: 1. The textbooks are prepared in short order due to often changes in curricula. The illustrations are made in a restricted time period in order to fill in the blanks in the book pages which have been composed. viii 2. The illustrations are made by people who are devoid of relevant art education due to low production cost and they are used with the aim of visualizing what has been expressed in the texts. 3. The illustrations are not properly positioned in the places that are set for them or they are scrolled in print. 4. The illustrations do not follow the approaches which aim at supplying the student with abilities that form the bases of creativity, like visual perception, comparison and comprehension. 5. It is found out that the textbooks, which occupy an important place in establishing visual forms of thought and education in children, are not suitable to students? level of perception and are devoid of attentive illustration, design and esthetic values. At the end of the study, recommendations were made concerning the problems about the research subject.
