An assessment of the curriculum of the visual arts lessons at primary school in terms of theoretical construction and applicability

The essential purpose of this thesis is to assess the curriculum of Visual Arts Lessons at primary schools based on the opinions of visual arts teachers. The first pilot application, which was developed in the scope of this study, was conducted with 10 visual arts teachers. The main application in study started with the voice-recorded interviews which were made with 15 visual arts teachers, who were selected from random primary schools in the Districts of Çankaya, Keçiören and Yenimahalle.The data in this study in which special situation method was employed were collected through the interviews with the teachers. The personal information obtained was arranged by means of the software, Microsoft Excel, and then the following information was arranged in the form of a table; educational statue, whether or not having an in-service education, years of seniority. The qualitative analysis of the data, which was obtained in the interviews, are conducted by means of the qualitative data analysis software, Nvivo 8.0.As a result of the content analysis of the interviews which were conducted with the visual arts teachers, it was found that the feasibility level of the Curriculum of the Visual Arts Lessons is low due to the following factors; insufficient physical environment, economic insufficiencies, lack of material, family and environmental factors, insufficient number of teachers, curriculum?s being boring for students, crowded classrooms, not having sufficient relevant information in the scope of the application of the program, insufficient time, etc. In the scope of the data of the study, 6 members of the board who had worked in the preparation stage of the Curriculum of Visual Arts Lessons in primary schools were contacted and their opinions about the Curriculum of Visual Arts Lessons were obtained in the form of a written document. As a result of the content analysis of the replies taken from the members of the board, it was found out that they stated the insufficiency of the weekly class hours and physical insufficiencies of ?Visual Arts Lessons? could cause difficulty during the implementation of the program. They also stated that the combined activities for more than one gain could be implemented to overcome the insufficient time problem.Based on the results that were obtained in the scope of this study, various recommendations were made for current and future Researchers and Teachers of Visual Arts.
