Determination of the primary school gifted and talented students?guidance needs based on their parents? and teachers? views

The purpose of this study was to investigate the guidance needs of the primaryschool gifted and talented students,regarding to their parents? and Science and Art Center teachers? views. The study was carried out in the Science and Art Centers of İstanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Adana, Trabzon, Van and Siirt. Totally, 342 parents and 100 teachers participated the study.In this study; a check listdesigned by the researcher was used to gather data. The check list was consist of 48 items including possible guidance needs of gifted and talented students. Frequencies and percentages are calculated for each item related to teachers? and parents? views.Guidance needs of gifted and talented students are analyzed into to groups: academical needs and socio-emotional needs.According to the findings of this study, mothers?most emphasized needs about primary school gifted and talented students?academical needs are:developing himself/herself multifaceted(% 72,7),future planning(% 68,7), job selection(% 62,6), school selection(% 59,6) and lack of motivation(% 55,6). Fathers? most emphasized needs about primary school gifted and talented students? academical needs are:future planning(% 83,3), job selection(% 81,9), developing himself/herself multifaceted(% 79,2), perfectionism(% 72,2) and lack of motivation(% 72,2). Teachers? most emphasized needs about primary school gifted and talented students? academical needs are:being aware of his/her talents(% 100), participating to group studies effectively (% 98), expressing him/herself(% 98),developing himself/herself multifaceted(% 98) and lack of motivation(% 98).Mothers? most emphasized socio-emotional needs of primary school gifted and talented students are: sentimentalism(% 76,8), susceptibility(% 69,7), stubbornness(% 68,7), planning leisure time activities(% 66,7) and sentiment(% 65,7). Fathers? most emphasized socio-emotional needs of primary school gifted and talented students are:planning leisure time activities(% 84,7), susceptibility(% 81,9), amnesia (% 75), sentimentalism(% 73,6), stubbornness(% 73,6)and sentiment (% 73,6). Teachers?most emphasized needs about primary school gifted and talented students? academical needs are:stubbornness(% 100), being social(% 98), empathy(% 96), self-distrust(% 94), parent relations(% 94) and planning leisure time activities(% 94).
