The evaluation of seventh grade students' learnings about the concept of integer

Main purpose of this research is to evaluate how is seventh grade students? classification attitude about the concept of integer in maths. The research is based on a survey model where quantitative and qualitative methods were used together.This study is applied on 628 randomly selected students of grade seven in official primary schools of Ministry of National Education in Çukurova, Adana in 2009-2010 education year. A test including numbers which requires integer examples and non examples was to be applied to students as a data collecting tool for the research. There are 26 numbers of integer examples and 25 number of non examples of integers in this test.According to the findings of the research, misconceptions about integer concept has found and some suggestions has been given about these misconceptions. The results obtained from the research can be summarized as following:1) It?s shown that students?answers about examples of integer concept were %65 correct, %35 incorrect.2) It?s shown that students? answers about nonexamples of integer concept were %63 correct, %37 incorrect.3) Students responses about examples of integer concept have %35 correct explanation, % 24 incorrect explanation and %14 of the resposes doesn?t have an explanation.4) Students responses about nonexamples of integer concept have %32 correct explanation, %53 incorrect explanation and %15 of the responses doesn?t have an explanation.5) It?s shown that the sign of the number is an important factor which the students make a decision about the given number is an integer.6) It?s shown that some students accept the given number as an integer because of the reading of the decimals, and some of the students don?t accept the given number as an integer because of the writing format of the decimals.
