Evaluation of environmental factors related to school accidents of primary school students

This study was conducted to evaluate the environmental factors related to school accidents of primary school students. The population of the study consisted of 5 primary schools in the city center of Sinop, which are affiliated to the Ministry of National Education of Sinop. The sample of the study consisted of 541 students who met the selective criteria, although the entire population was accepted. The criteria for being included in the study are primary and secondary school students, volunteering for participation in the study and their parents' consent to participate in the study. Data were collected using the introductory information form prepared by the researcher, the individual opinions section on the physical security of the school, the students 'information scale for safety measures in school accidents, and the students' behavior scale for safety measures in school accidents. Data were analyzed using SPSS21 package program and Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis-H tests and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient were used. It was found that the unsafe behaviors and unsafe behaviors subscale scores of security measures in school accidents were higher in boys than girls and the safe behavior subscale score in girls was higher than boys. The unsafe behaviors, safe behaviors, and safe behaviors outside the building subscale scores of 4th grade students were found to be higher than 3rd grade students. It was found that the students who showed partially running behavior on stairs and who paid attention while moving on wet surfaces had higher sub-dimension scores of safe behaviors, safe behaviors outside the building and behaviors towards the service vehicle. It was found that as the scale of knowledge about safety measures increased in school accidents, scores of behavior scale increased. As a result of the research, it may be suggested to continue the relevant trainings in order to create a safe school environment.
