The effect of the creative drama method in the development of speaking skills in the primary school class 3 Turkish lesson

In this study, the impact of creative drama method in 3rd grade Turkish lesson on speaking skills of students has been researched. The study has been performed during spring term of 2016-2017 school year in Çaycuma College Private Çaycuma Primary School in Çaycuma, Zonguldak province. One of the 3rd grade classes has been selected as experimental group while another 3rd grade class as control group. Each group has been made up of 23 students, i.e. 46 students in total. While the lessons in the experimental group have been taught under the syllabus prepared based on drama method, the lessons in the control group have been taught under the current teaching program. To show the impact of creative drama method on speaking skills, "Healthcare and Environment" theme of the Turkish lesson of 3rd grade. Quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control group has been employed in the study. Data-gaining tools of the experimental study are "Speaking Skill Assessment Form" developed by the researcher and pre-test and post-test questions which the students speak on. The experimental part of the study has been performed within 6 weeks. Pre-test and post-test have been applied for both groups. Quantitavie data of the study have been evaluated by the researcher and an expert in the field and analyzed with SPSS 20.0 package program. Shapiro-Wilk normality test has been applied at first and the date where the range is normal have been analyzed with t test. Significance level in the study has been assumed as 0.05. As a result of the study, there has occurred a significant difference in speaking skills of the students in experimental group compared to control group students. In accordance with this, it is concluded that speaking education performed with creative drama method affects speaking skills of the students in a positive way.
