Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to determine the family functioning of the 4th grade students in primary school. For this purpose, the relationship between family functionality and gender, total number of children, perceived homework achievement, parents' education status and socio-economic level were investigated. The research was designed in a descriptive survey model. The sample of the study consisted of 1000 4th grade students attending 6 primary schools in the central district of Osmaniye in 2016-2017. The research data was collected with ''Family Assessment Device'' which adapted by Bulut (1990), ''Perceived Homework Achievement Scale" which developed by Hong and Milgram (1996) and adopted by İflazoğlu (2005), ''Personal Information Form'' which developed by Bacanlı (1997) and organized by the research. In the analysis of data, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation were given, independent groups t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and pearson moments product correlation coefficient were used . The findings of the study showed that the students who participated in the study perceived the family functions as unhealthy in the sub-dimension of the required attention. On the other hand, the findings have shown that they perceive healthy in terms of problem solving, communication, roles, behavior control, emotional response and general functions. It was observed that the homework achievement scale scores of the students who participated in the research were higher in the scale of the perceived task. It was determined that there was a positively low correlation between the scores of the family functionality scores and the task achievement scores. When the family functionality scores of the students were examined by gender, a significant difference was found in favor of female students. There was a significant difference between the average scores of family functionality and total number of children. This significant difference was found to be in favor of the increase in the total number of children. Also, the study showed that there was a significant difference between the students' average family functionality scores and father's educational status. This significant difference was found to be in favor of fathers with no graduation and graduated primary school or secondary school in the aspect of communication, roles, emotional responsiveness, showing required attention. The study in order to determine whether the students' family functionality score averages differed according to their mother's educational status, showed a result in the favor of mothers with no graduation and primary school graduation or secondary school graduation; significantly differs at the all-dimensions. When the family functionality scores of the students were analyzed according to their socio-economic levels, it was determined that there was a significant difference in the sub-dimensions other than the problem-solving dimension. Accordingly, family functionality was found to be higher in families with lower socio-economic status in all dimensions except the problem-solving dimension. A significant difference was found in favor of girls in the study conducted to determine the relationship between perceived homework achievement scale scores and gender variable. In the other hand, there were any significant relation have been found between the students' number of siblings, their parents' educational status and socio-economic levels and the scores obtained from the homework achievement scale. Research results can be shared with students' teachers and parents. Thus, parents' awareness of family function may improve. Various seminars and programs can be organized about family functionality.
