Investigation of coherence (Harmony) of the texts and the pictures in the 4th grade Turkish textbook

In this research, it is aimed to show the harmony of the pictures in the 4th grade Turkish textbook with the texts. The research is in screening model. The study group of the research consists of two parts. The first part of the study group is constituted by 4th grade Turkish textbooks, published by Ministry of Education and studied at primary schools in 2018-2019 academic year; and the second part by the researcher and four classroom teachers ,who work at central primary schools in Sivas ,as participants. These four classroom teachers have been chosen randomly according to probability based sampling methods. The data of the research have been collected by using the document analysis technique. "Illustration - Text Relevance Category List" has been created by the researcher in order to show the compliance between illustration and text. Participants have reviewed the appropriateness of the pictures in the Turkish textbook to the text they belonged to according to the "Illustration-Text Relevance Category List". The "Illustration-Text Relevance Category List"s, in which the participants expressed their opinions independently and objectively, have been presented in a single table. The data collected by this category list have been analyzed and interpreted using the descriptive analysis approach out of the qualitative data analysis approaches. As a result of the findings obtained from the research, it was found that the pictures helps the students with a level below the medium level to predict the content of the texts; they support the title of the text they belong with a high level; but they support the main idea of the texts they belong to below the middle level; they support the title of the text they belong with a high level; but they support the main idea of the texts they belong to below the middle level The colors used in the pictures are vivid, clear and it is remarkable; they are compatible with the text above the intermediate level; images overlaps the story elements of time, event and hero in text below the medium level. It overlaps with the element of place above the middle level; pictures are related to daily life in high level. In addition to pictures related to the text, cartoon, photos, graphics etc. are used above the medium level. It was observed that apperance of people in the pictures (clothing, format, etc.) is suitable to the targeted group at high level. As a result of the survey, in the light of the findings, some suggestions are presented. Key Words: Turkish Course book, Text, Illustration, Paint-Text Combination.
