Observation of the writing characteristics of the primary school first class students

This study has been made in order to observe the italic handwriting characteristics of primary school first class students. On the quantitative aspect of the study the form, aligning, space, size, conjunction, inclination, readability of the letters have been observed in terms of changes and gender comparisons. On the qualitative side the view of the teachers have been taken. This observation has been made in 12 governmental schools and 2 private schools in Kütahya, its towns and villages. The samples are the first class students at the above mentioned schools ( n = 218 ). After the observations it has been determined that the students beginning after 72 months of age are more advantaged in terms of form, aligning, space, size and conjunction of the letters in italic handwriting changes than those beginning to school at the age of between 60 to 72 months. There has been no differences seen related to gender about the variables evaluated. About the readability of the letters, it has been found out that they face difficulties in writing the letters "s , ş , k , b , p , r , a , n". The teachers mentioned that the students over between 60 to 72 months are more disadvantaged than the students of 72 months on readiness, muscle development and adaptation to the school.
