Investigation of primary education life sciences and social studies course books in terms of social gender

Gender roles of individuals and schools and textbooks are important in the process of socialization. The school is an institution where gender identities are matured as the main place where cultural and social values are transferred and reproduced. It is very important to ensure that gender roles are transferred to the new generations through two important courses such as social studies and life science which are taught at primary level and are intertwined with life. Because of this importance, it is hoped that our work will be beneficial in shaping the future generations with the right directions. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the primary, first and second grade life science and fourth grade social studies textbooks in the 2019-2020 academic year according to various variables in terms of gender. In accordance with this purpose, in the text and visuals of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade Life Science and 4th Grade Social Studies textbooks; the gender variability of objects identified with individuals, patterns of behavior and family roles drawn to individuals, occupational choices of individuals, personal engagement and actions of individuals; individuals' being active or passive according to the gender perspective of the society; The aim of this study was to answer the stereotyped expressions which are shaped according to different variables of gender in language. The main objectives of the study are to determine the role of the text and images in the content of these books in terms of providing students with opinions on gender expressions and gender roles. In this study, one of the qualitative research methods, document analysis, was conducted. The data obtained from the scanned sources were evaluated by content analysis (content analysis) method. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the use of gender discourse in the textbooks and presentation of gender roles were prepared with sensitivity in general, but this sensitivity level was not sufficient.
