Examination of primary school mathematics textbooks in terms of stem values

The aim of the research is to examine primary school mathematics textbooks in terms of root values in the mathematics curriculum. For this purpose, document analysis method, one of the qualitative research designs, was preferred. During the data collection process of the research, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade mathematics textbooks belonging to the Ministry of National Education used in schools between 2022-2023 were examined. The data collected from the textbooks were made with descriptive and content analysis, which are qualitative research data analysis methods. With the descriptive analysis stage, the root values in the books were determined and it was determined in which units and how much these root values were mentioned and how the root values were located. In this process, the data was subjected to content analysis. Within the scope of the research, within the framework of the root values included in the curriculum (justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism and helpfulness) in primary school mathematics textbooks; topics, speech bubbles, information box, playtime, let's do it together, it's your turn, unit evaluation, let's remember, study, learn, I wonder if we learned? , let's have fun, activity, example, let's do, section evaluation sections were examined. As a result of these examinations, a total of 856 sections were determined and the most root value among these sections was; It was determined that in the 1st grade, "let's do it together", in the 2nd grade "Let's learn", in the 3rd grade "sections and topics", in the 4th grade "Let's remember and study". In addition, among the primary school mathematics textbooks examined, the root value of love is the most; The least emphasis was placed on the root values of friendship, honesty and patriotism. According to grade levels; 'patriotism and honesty' in grade 1; 'patriotism and friendship' in 2nd grade; 'respect, patriotism and friendship' in 3rd grade; In the 4th grade, no message transmission related to the values of 'friendship and honesty' was encountered. Accordingly, as a result of the research, it was seen that the examined 2022-2023 MEB publications did not reflect the root values of the primary school mathematics textbooks with the desired proficiency. At the same time, it was concluded that the distribution of the root values included in the content to the textbooks was not made in sufficient equality.
