Abstract (EN)

This survey research aims to examine primary, second, third, and fourth-grade students' knowledge of concept regarding the concept of "planet". In the research, a survey model is used. The study was conducted in a primary school which is located in the district of Sultanbeyli in İstanbul and has a low socioeconomic level in the fall semester of the 2017-2018 academic year. Within the scope of this research, a total of 1653 students at the level of primary, second, third, and fourth grade were reached by practicing with 13 branches for each grade. The branches of the classes that participated in the research were randomly selected. Both the researcher and the instructor of the course were present in the classroom environment during the study period in all selected branches. However, all teachers were interviewed before the study to ensure that teachers did not intervene in the process. During the study, students were given time to think about the questions posed within the frame of specific questions directed only by the researcher. They were asked the draw everything they thought and came to their minds on a blank drawing paper within the scope of questions directed in the process: What is Planet? What are their features? Do You Think There Is Only One Planet? Are There Multiple Planets? If They Are More Than One, Then Do They Look Like Each Other? Where Are The Planets? What Do They Look Like? At the end of the approximately 25-30 minutes for drawing, the researcher took care of each student individually and asked them the meaning of every figure that they draw on the paper. Short notes were kept on the drawing paper in line with the student statements. At the end of the practice, the drawings of the students were evaluated within the scope of this study. The pictures were examined by using descriptive analysis method. Each drawing was examined one by one. The concepts that exist in the drawings are divided into titles as drawings related to the concepts in the Solar system, drawings related to the concepts of astronomy and drawings out of the concepts of astronomy. Based on the drawings, respective criteria were determined, and the drawings were coded under these criteria. As a result of the codification, the percentage frequency was determined according to the frequency of using concepts of students at each level. In this regard, it is found that primary and second-grade students made drawings and coding according to the criteria determined excluding the concepts of astronomy, third and fourth-grade students concentrated on the drawings and coding related to the concepts in the solar system and the concepts of astronomy more.
