Examination of primary school students' attitudes towards innovation in terms of some variables

In the 21st century, when education systems are transformed with the aim of raising qualified manpower, developing innovation attitudes in individuals from an early age is of critical importance in the construction of innovative societies of the future. In this context, curricula, teaching processes and the student's life environment should be designed in a way to develop students' innovative skills. The aim of this study is to examine whether primary school students' attitudes towards innovation differ according to demographic variables (gender, grade level, school type, father's occupation, mother's occupation, favourite courses and favourite game type). This study was conducted using the descriptive survey model, which is one of the quantitative research designs. The study group consisted of third and fourth grade students enrolled in public and private primary schools located in the city center of Sakarya during the 2024–2025 academic year. The "Attitude Scale Towards Innovation for Primary School Students" was employed as the data collection instrument. The scale was administered to a total of 680 students throughout Sakarya. Of these participants, 393 attended public schools in the city center, 131 attended public schools in districts and villages, and 156 were enrolled in private schools. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS software package. Within the scope of the scale, students' total attitude scores towards innovation, as well as their scores for the sub-dimensions of curiosity, self-confidence, alternative use, and creativity, were examined in relation to the specified demographic variables. Based on the findings, significant differences were identified between students' attitudes towards innovation and its sub-dimensions and the variables of gender, type of school, favorite subjects, and preferred types of games. Notably, the preferred type of game was found to have a significant impact on students' innovation attitudes. On the other hand, the variables of parental occupations and grade level did not yield significant differences in students' attitudes towards innovation.
