Examination of primary school students' speaking skills in Turkish course

In this study, students' opinions about speaking skills in Turkish lessons and speaking skills were examined. For this purpose, the case study model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Thus, it was tried to reveal the speaking skills of the students who have just started the school with little knowledge. In line with the purpose of the research, first grade students were observed and their opinions were taken in a primary school in the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa in the second semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. The study group was chosen by the researcher by easy sampling method to ensure applicability. Speaking skill observation form and semi-structured interview form were used as data collection tools. The collected data was subjected to content analysis. As a result of the research, it was determined that the students had many mistakes in pronunciation, intonation and pausing, using their voice and body language, speaking fluently and obeying the rules of speaking and etiquette. A few mistakes were detected in going out of the subject. The students did not show any mistakes in using foreign words and words in the correct sense, in explaining the events in the order they occurred, in speaking with the local dialect, and speaking vulgarly and slang. In the results of the interviews, the students defined speaking as communication and stated that reading a book and respect and courtesy were effective on speaking. It is noteworthy that students try to solve the problems they encounter in speaking, again through communication.
