An investigation of burnout level of school managers and teachers at primary and secondary schools

Abstract (EN)

This research, in which levels of burnout of the managers and teachers working at primary and secondary schools, aims to investigate the levels of burnout of managers and teachers depending on some demographic, personal, economic and social variables. For this research, mixed method research is used. 412 managers and who work in primary and secondary schools in Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province during 2015-2016 educational year, comprise the study group of this research's quantitative aspect. Qualitative aspect of this research , onthe other hand, is comprised of 25 teachers working at these same schools. Data of the quantitative aspect of this research are the "Personal Information Questionnaire" and the "Maslach Burnout Scale". Also, data of the qualitative aspect are collected via "Semi-Structured Interview Arithmetic average, T-test, one-way analysis of variance and Post-Hoc tests are carried out in statistical analysis of the collected data. Descriptive analysis method is utilized in analysis of the qualitative data. According to research findings, it is evident that teachers experience burnout at low levels for emotional exhaustion and desensation sub-dimensions, while they experience burnout at medium level for personal success sub-dimension. Considering the overal findings, it is evident that managers and teachers burnout levels are low. As a result of conducted interviews, some issues that teachers feel uncomfortable (classroom size, uneducated parents, indifference of students, education system) are determined ans it is concluded that these cause exhaustion and burnout for teachers. In consequence of this research, it is clear that necessary measures should be taken by promoting the status of the teaching profession and also by providing economic support.
