Imam-hatiplik identity and values: Example of Eskişehir

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the identity and values of imam-hatip students studying in imam-hatip high schools, one of the most important educational institutions in Turkey. In order to obtain more detailed data, qualitative research design and phenomenology method were used. The research was conducted with a total of 20 students, 10 female and 10 male, studying at the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade levels in 2 Anatolian imam-hatip high schools in Eskişehir city centre affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the 2022-2023 academic year. In the study, a total of 16 open-ended questions were asked to 20 students using semi-structured face-to-face interview technique. The data obtained in line with the opinions of the students were subjected to descriptive and content analysis. In the findings, the statements of the participants on the subject were included by direct quotation. As a result of the research, it was determined that the participants adopted and accepted the imam-hatip identity, that this identity was formed by religious lessons, school environment, environmental factors, that there are religious, moral / social values gained in imam-hatip, and that imam-hatip identity affects the view of these values.
