The role of migrations in transition from empire to nation state 1918-1923

This dissertation focuses on the movements of migrations that took place in Ottoman Empire between 1918 and 1923 that coincides the transition period from Empire to a national state building. Within this context the aids in various fields such as housing, subsistence and healtth provided by the Governments of Istanbul and Ankara are examined. The mentioned aids which were allocated for the Muslim immigrants who were forced to leave their hometowns as a consequence of the occupation in the particular period were analyzed in depth. Besides the aids provided by the Governments, the organizations notably Red Crescent founded by Muslim communities in the non-occupied reagions and their activities are covered. The main prupose of the study is to determine the effect of the discourse utilized during the delivery of aids provided by Governments and local organizations to the needy immigrants in terms of creating a sense of unity and solidarity among the Turkish, Kurdish, Laz, Albanian and Circasssian Muslim communities living in occupied regions.
