Özet (EN)
Up to 15 percent of couples are infertile. Male infertility plays a role in more than a third of these couples. Male infertility is caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function, or blockages that prevent sperm from being delivered. The aim of this study is to examine the role of selenium on some fertility and sex hormones in infertile men in Thi-Qar city (Iraq). For this purpose, 100 infertile male patients were included by forming an experimental group, considering various criteria. Increased and developed sperm count, motility and normal morphology were observed in infertile men treated with selenium during the study period. With selenium supplementation, an increase in sperm count was 61.06%, sperm motility 132%, sperm vitality 89%, normal sperm morphology 34.12% and ejaculate volume 45.83%. However, it should be noted that the changes in these matters may partially affect the habits, lifestyle, and nutrition of the person. It seems possible to state that low selenium levels in the testis are associated with male infertility and selenium is required for spermatogenesis. It is also known that selenium deficiency increases oxidative stress, which negatively affects spermatogenesis. 2021, 71 pages KEYWORDS: Male infertility, selenium, sperm morphology, FSH, testosterone
