Abstract (EN)

Until transferring its global world leader status to the United States of America (US),United Kingdom (UK) has had an essential role in liberal and pluralist approacheswith respect to media. In the post 2nd World War period, the role and power of mediato affect national public opinion is evident.In this respect, media in the UK has been strengthening and preserving its power asan effective public opinion founder. Through this dissertation candidacy andmembership talk processes of Turkey for the European Union (EU) are realizedthrough discourse analysis. Two disciplinary perspectives, European Studies andinternational relations were used of along the dissertation. The focus of thedissertation is on Turkey?s candidacy process along 1999 ? 2006 with respect to thereflection of the news related to this process within British media through discourseanalysis to establish public opinion. Accordingly, media institutions such as the BBC,The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph and Financial Times weregone through in this dissertation. The diplomatic relations and military relationsbetween Turkey and the EU; Cyprus question and relations with Greece, democracyand human rights, developments in the post-September 11 period and the problem offactionalization were considered as separate topics along the dissertation.Key Words: media , public , candidacy, EU, public opinion, process
