Abstract (EN)

In this study, the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the European states society in the 19th century and the process leading to the membership of the Ottoman Empire to the European states society will be examined through the concept of international society put forward by the English School and the institutions that emerged the international society. In the discussion on the elements that by build the international community within the English School, two elements, common values and common culture, come to the fore. Within the school, there is a prevailing opinion that it is sufficient for states to have common values in order to create an international community. From this point of view, considering that the Ottoman Empire was a participant of the main institutions of the European states society such as the balance of power, international law and war in the 19th century, the idea that the Ottoman Empire was a part of the European states society will be defended. It is seen that the Ottoman Empire and the European society of states have common values and interests on the basis of institutions such as war and the balance of power, especially by emphasizing that the European states sided with the Ottoman Empire in the 1853 Crimean War and the 1856 Paris Agreement signed after the war. While the idea that the Ottoman Empire was a member of the European society is supported by the ideas of the English School thinkers who focus on the common value element in theory, it is based on a historical narrative with the Crimean War and the Treaty of Paris. In this sense, historical narrative and theoretical approach will be carried out together in this study. Keywords: English School, Pluralism, Common Interest, European States Society, Ottoman Empire.
