Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was aimed to determine the level of boredom, causes, coping strategies and engagement in online lessons, and the explanatory and predictive relationships between them. The study group of the research consisted of 64 university students studying at the English preparatory class of Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Düzce University and Karabük University. The method of the research is mixed method and the design of the study is single case conversion design. The qualitative method of the research was carried out according to the grounded theory, and the quantitative method was carried out in accordance with the explanatory correlational design. The data of the research were collected in the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year, during the "total lockdown" Covid-19 period. Therefore, data were obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted online. Content analysis was used to answer the first question determined in line with the purpose of the research, tetrachoric correlation analysis to answer the second question, and probit regression analysis to answer the third question. Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS 22 and Mplus 8.3 programs. The findings obtained from the qualitative analyzes showed that the majority of the students felt boredom in the synchronous online English lessons, the boredom was caused by various reasons, the students resorted to a number of strategies to cope with their boredom, and these differentiated their engagement in the lessons or caused them not to engage in the lessons. Similar findings were obtained through content analyzes for asynchronous courses. The results of the tetrachoric correlation analysis and probit regression analyzes showed that the levels of boredom felt in online synchronous and asynchronous lessons, their causes, and the strategies used to cope with boredom were significantly and selectively correlated both with each other and with different aspects of engagement in English lessons.
