Özet (EN)

English has an important effect on the other languages. We can say it for Turkish as well. In this study, first of all, the concepts of language, linguistics, affix and root are examined. As the Turkish language is agglutinative, it is important to emphasize the concepts of affix and root. In this study, which compares the affix systems of the two languages, important differences between the two languages are studied. Turkish is an agglutinative language belonging to Ural-Altaic language family. English belongs to Indo-European language family. English is both an agglutinative and inflective language in terms of structure. There are many derivational affixes in Turkish whereas in English there are not so many. Word formation in Turkish is formed with derivational affixes, except for some foreign affixes and words. In English this is formed through different ways, these points are explained with examples. The word formation in English is constructed with affixes (prefix, suffix), inflection of words, combination of two words. There are many inflections in Turkish whereas in English only eight inflections are used. In both languages, there exist a lot of inflections. In our study, the differences and similarities between the two languages are analyzed. The influence of Arabic and Persian is predominant in Turkish, while the influence of Greek and Latin is predominant in English. Word formation is done with affixes in Turkish. In English, it is not the only way. Prepositions and Pronouns are as effective as affixes for word formation.Key Words: Derivation affix, Inflection affix, Comparative Linguistics.
