Abstract (EN)
The British campaign in Iraq started with the invasion of the Fao Peninsula on 6 November 1914. They had almost no defeat until the Battle of Salman-ı Pak on 22 November 1915. Their enormous defeat at Salman-ı Pak was a turning point for the British-Indian Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force. The British 6th Division, which had to retreat to Kut-Al-Amara after the defeat, was besieged by the Turkish soldiers. Approximately 13,500 British and Indian soldiers surrendered to the Turkish Force on 29 April 1916. As a result, the British appointed a commission called "Mesopotamia Commission" by the act of parliament to enquire into the operations of war in Mesepotamia and the surrender, and changed some unsuccessful commanders while Kut-al-Amara siege and relief operations were going on. They increased the number of British soldiers far above the number of Turkish soldiers. They prepared weapons, ammunition, war tools and equipment and ample means of transportation appropriate for the Tigris. They appointed General F. S. Maude as the commander of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force. Ottoman State, instead of reinforcing her already inadequate military units in Iraq, withdrew some of her troops from here and sent them to Iran. Therefore, the places that were tried to be defended with insufficient weapons and soldiers were captured one by one by the British. Ottoman State lost Baghdad, the most important city and military centre in Iraq. The British even occupied Mosul in defiance of the Armistice of Mudros. Thus, the Ottoman domination in Iraq came to an end.
