Abstract (EN)
Asthma; which is characterized by reversible airway obstruction, is a chronic inflammatory disorder. For this reason, because of anti-inflammatory effects of steroids, are basis of treatment. But if these drugs are used long term and high dose, could cause systemic side effects, including impairment in carbonhydrate metabolism. In this study, we aimed to compare the glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR and HbA1c values with normal ranges and to evaluate statistically in children with asthma using inhaled steroids. This study was performed between January 2007- October 2010 in Abant Izzet Baysal University Medical Faculty, in Division of Pediatric Pulmonology. The records of patients with a diagnosis of asthma who were between 3-17 years were analized retrospectively. SPSS 15.0 software was used for statistical analysis of patients? datas and p<0.05 was accepted as significant. In this study; 26 girls (%46,4), 30 boys (%53,6) totally 56 asthmatic child were included. In children of the study group, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR and HbA1c values were obtained to evaluate the carbonhydrate metabolism. In the study group and the subgroups (groups a,b,c), the relation between the laboratory values and IS usage period were evaluated and there wasn?t any statistical significant difference and corelations. Study group was divided into two groups (1. and 2. groups) according to the daily IS dosage. When the relation between the laboratory values and daily IS dosage were compared in these two groups there wasn?t any statistically significant difference. As a result of this study, we concluded that IS usage period and dosage, does not effect carbonhydrate metabolism in children with asthma.
