Psychometric properties of the inhaler compliance scale: Validity and reliability study

This research is an analytical study conducted to evaluate the inhaler device compliance of individuals with COPD and to adapt the Inhaler Compliance Scale into Turkish by studying its psychometric properties, validity and reliability. The study was conducted with a total of 300 COPD patients who applied to Çankırı State Hospital Chest Diseases Polyclinic between February and April 2022. In the study, data were collected through face-to-face interviews with patients using the Sociodemographic Survey Form, Medication Compliance Reporting Scale and Inhaler Compliance Scale. Ethics committee approval, institutional permission and verbal volunteering consent from individuals were obtained for the study. Individuals with COPD who were accepted to the study were asked to answer the survey questions. In the evaluation of the data, analysis was made with parametric or non-parametric tests using Histegram and Probability Graphs, Kolmogorov, Smirnow/Shapiro-Wilk Tests. Adaptation of the Inhaler Compliance Questionnaire into Turkish was achieved by completing the language and content validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity stages. As a result of the study, when the findings obtained with the medication compliance reporting scale and inhaler compliance reporting scale used in the study were examined, it was determined that there was a strong positive relationship between the two scales as a result of the correlation analysis. It has been determined that compliance with the inhaler device is lower in individuals with COPD in cases of advanced age, male gender, low education level, and low income. In order to increase compliance with the inhaler device, correct training should be provided and this training should be repeated at regular intervals to prevent abuse and misuse of inhaler drugs. The study aimed to adapt the inhaler compliance questionnaire into Turkish, and as a result of the analysis, the reliability and validity values of the questionnaire were calculated to be good. It was determined that the scale was suitable for use. It is recommended to use the scale in future research.
