Value of optic nerve shield diameter on prognosis and mortality in stroke, intracranial hemorrhage and post cardiopulmonary resuscitation cases

We aimed to investigate the importance of optic nerve sheath diameters measured from computed tomography images of intracerebral ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and post-CPR patients in relation to prognosis and mortality of patients, and to manage follow-up and treatment of patients. Between January 2014 and December 2016, adults aged 18 years or older who were admitted to the Anesthesiology Intensive Care Unit of the Celal Bayar University Medical Faculty were enrolled in a case study of ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke + traumatic hemorrhage) and post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation and intensive care for the first 8 hours after the onset. The diameter of the optic nerve sheath of the cases was measured 3 mm posterior to the optic disc exit site in both eyes by repeated brain CT scans in intense cervical infarction and clinical follow-up. A total of 121 patients were included in the study which are 39 with ischemic stroke, 45 with intracerebral hemorrhage, and 37 with post-CPR. The mean age of the patients was 54.90 ± 20.83, 65.30% were male and 34.70% were female. In our study, it was determined that ONSD was differentiated according to the output pattern for all patient groups. The patients with ex-dominance of all 24-hour right and left, ONSD data were the highest. However, differences in ONSD measurements were more pronounced in the instracerebral hemorrhage group. As a result of our study, we found that ONSD measurement values are a useful parameter in predicting mortality and prognosis of patients.
