Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is to assess the teachers' levels of professional competence in terms of perception of the teachers graduated from Education Faculty of Inonu University and perceptions of principals in their school. The research consisted three sub-problems.In the research, teachers' perception of professional competence was tried to set within the context of gender, branch, professional seniority, their in-service training and competence in education process. Descriptive model was used in the research.The sample of the research was determined with the maximum variation technique which is one of the purposeful sampling . The field of the survey were the teachers graduated from Education Faculty of Inonu University working in primary and secondary schools in the centre of Malatya and the principals of these schools.The sample consisted of 380 teachers and 50 principals.The data derived from the survey was accumulated with the five scale rating questionaire composed of 8 dimensions and 49 items.These data was analised with descriptive statistical tests, Kruskal Wallis-H Test and Whitney U-Test. The findings obtained from the survey are as the following : While there were no significant difference between the perceptions of the professional competence of the teachers in terms of gender, branch and professional seniority, the variant of the number of in-service courses made a remarkable effect on them. The teachers evaluated themselves as " quite adequate" or "highly adequate" on the competences related to the education process. It was also found that the evaluation of the principals on the teachers' efficacy was "quite adequate". Keywords: Competence, professional competence, the perception of competence
