The perspective of Inönü University Faculty of Medicine 6th grade students' views on profession and specialization education and factors affecting their specialization choice

Aim: In this study, İnönü University Faculty of Medicine's 6th grade students' view of the profession of medicine, their ideas about the profession of medicine, what they think about the future of medicine in our country, their expertise in medicine and their expertise, their criteria according to years in our country It is aimed to examine the changes in preferences. Material and Method: The cross-sectional descriptive research was carried out between 23.10.2019-28.12.2019 by applying a questionnaire to face-to-face students in İnönü University Faculty of Medicine. In the study, it was tried to reach all senior students of medical faculty. only those who volunteer information given to students prior to the study were enrolled in this study evaluating the findings obtained in the study, IBM SPSS Statistics 22 for statistical analysis (SPSS IBM, Turkey) programs were used. Results: Our study was conducted with a total of 178 senior students, 82 (46.1%) boys and 96 (53.9%) girls. The average age of students is 24.24 ± 1.09. The rate of males loving medicine (81.7%) was statistically significantly lower than females (93.8%) (p: 0.024; p <0.05). While 97.2% of the students participating in the study want to be specialists, 2.8% do not want to be experts. While 80.9% of those who want to become experts want to do their specialty education at the university hospital, 19.1% want to do the education and research hospital. 5.8% of students want to specialize in basic sciences, 61% in clinical sciences and 33.1% in surgical sciences. When we look at the expertise preferences of the students who participated in our study, the first 5 branches were Eye Diseases (7.5%), Internal Diseases (7.5%), Ear Nose and Throat Diseases (6.9%), Family Medicine (6.9%) and Emergency Medicine. (6.3%). Conclusion: One of the most important shares of students participating in our study is that they love the profession of medicine. A great majority of the students want to get specialty training and become a specialist. In specialization preferences, the most desired branches are usually internal branches. For the continuation of primary health care services, Family Medicine expertise should be more encouraged and the continuation of the implementation of the entire primary care through the family medicine system should be ensured. Necessary measures should be taken quickly so that less preferred branches do not adversely affect the health system in the future.
