Abstract (EN)
Objective We don't have enough data about the number of handicapped people, reasons and types of disability because of the inadequicy of our databases. Detailed and properly collected data is needed in this subject to prevent and rehabilitate disability. In our study, we aimed to contribute to the database of people with disability, which we think is not sufficient in our country, by reviewing handicapped patients who were referred to Turgut Özal Medical Center. Methods Of the archive records between 01.01.2015 and 12.29.2015, which were comprised of handicapped people who applied to Health Board for disability report, 2241 were screened retrospectively. Age, sex, month of application, rate of function loss, continuity of disability, type of disability, purpose of use and applied division are recorded. Those who applied for social assistance were called with phone to learn whether or not they were receiving social assistance. SPSS for Windows Version 17.0 was used for statistical analysis in our study. Results 863 women and 1378 men were included in our study with mean age of 33.18±26.63 years. Mean rate of disability was 67.36±22.53 and 1272 (56.7%) people were severely handicapped. Of all the reports given, 57.6% were continous reports. Department with the most reports given was child psychiatry (29.7%), which is followed by pediatric neurology (12.9%) and adult neurology (11.2%). The most common type of disability was; mental in 0-18 age group (64.9%), chronic diseases in 19-64 age group (74.2%) and over 65 age group (87.8%). Conclusions 43.2% of our cases were children and the most common disability in this age group was mental disability. Chronic diseases were observed as the most common reason of disability in adult age group. The fact that mental disability is that much prominent in children age group shows us, family doctors, that we shouldn't only examine children from a biological standpoint but also from a mental standpoint. As family doctors, we should also inform handicapped people who come to the clinic for examination, about social support given by the state. Keywords: Disability, Health Board, Reports
