Examination of burnout and depression levels and associated factors of research assistant physicians working at İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center

Goals: Doctors may encounter psychological problems due to toughness and intensity of their jobs. The most important examples to these are depression and exhaustion. In this study, observation of depression and exhaustion levels and related factors of resarcher doctors who work in İnönü University, Turgut Özal Medical Center, was aimed. Materials and Method: Population of our cross-secitonal study is formed of researcher doctors who study in internal and surgical departments in İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center. Minimum sample size was calculated as 191 people with 95% confidence interval and 5% error margin and 202 doctors were included in total. The sample was formed with simple random sampling method. The survey was applied to all doctors who joined our study. In gathering of data, a questionnaire which asks the personal information(formed by the researcher as a result of related literature research), Beck's Depression Scale, Maslach Burnout Scale were used. The analyses were done in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) 22 packet software. In this article, descriptive and categorical data were shown as "n" value and "%" value; continuous data was shown as "mean±standart deviate(mean±SD)" value and "median interquartile range(25-75 percentile)" value. In this study, Chi Square test, Student T-test, Mann Whitney U-Test, One Way ANOVA analysis, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis were used. Statistical significance level was accepted as p<0,05 in the analyses. Results: 44,6% of participants are women, 55,4% of participants are men and their mean age is 30,7±5,1. Depression score of women is significantly higher than depression score of men (p=0,04). Participants with no job-related concern for the future have significantly less depression score (p<0,001). There is a significant diffirence between depression score and amount of additional work shifts (p=0,005). Depression score is significantly higher in the participants who were exposed to physical violence by patients/relative of the patients (p<0,001). Depersonalization score of the participants in surgical medical departments is significantly higher than the depersonalization score of the participants in internal medical departments (p=0,048). While the emotional exhaustion(p<0,001) and depersonalization score of the participants with concern for the future is significantly higher the score of the participants with no concern for the future(p=0,001); personal success score(p=0,011) is significantly higher in participants with no concern for the future. Participants with additional work shifts have significantly higher emotional exhaustion(p=0,042) score than participants with no additional work shifts. While the participants who exposed to physical violation by patients/relative of the patients have significantly higher emotional exhaustion(p<0,001) and depersonalization(p=0,003) scores; their self success scores(p=0,017) is significantly lower. Significantly positive correlation between depression, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores; significantly negative correlation between depression and self success scores were found. Conclusion: In this study, higher depression and exhaustion/burnout levels were found in doctors with concern for the future; higher exhaustion levels were found in doctors who have additional work shifts; higher depression and exhaustion levels were found in doctors who were exposed to physical voilence by patients/relative of the patients. It can be said that, improving work conditions, reducing violance by applying required enforcements will help reducing psychological problems in doctors.
