Applicability of supply chain within the construction sector: An example application within steel construction sector

The goal of a business is to profit by delivering a product or service on time to the customer. In order to make this happen, the products or services must be supplied at low costs with high quality. Proper management in all stages from purchasing to the delivery of the product to the customer form the foundation of supply chain management.Under increasing competition organizations; Tend to incline on using supply chain management in order to keep or increase their competitive advantage. They tend to use models that they think would increase their competitive advantage or they come to agreements with other companies when capabilities are limited and use their supply chains to complete the tasks which are beyond their abilities with high quality and low cost. Companies may also use their own constructed supply chain models.Problem to be investigated within this context; to investigate the above and it?s application within the construction sector, it?s benefits, the problems which arise during implementation, and to bring forth the factors that must be used for it?s implementation.To use these as an example, as an addition within in the literature review, a case study has been included about a firm within the Sakarya region which conducts construction using reinforced concrete, does not have a plant or workers, and has teamed up with another company to use their supply chain management model for factory projects such as industrial steel production. In this example, the construction firm is the main contractor and the firm with the supply chain model is the subcontractor/vendor. However the subcontractor / vendor firm shares the tasks with the firms within the supply chain management, also provides the high quality products at low cost, and manages the whole process for the contractor and the customer.Reasons for the approval of the example case study by management for information purposes:-To be able to understand the implementation of supply chain management.-Survey: It is thought that only points of view rather than net results will suffice from the data, which will be generated by the research and development teams.For this reason, data is collected from within specific situations in the study, and from two projects that include various tasks from firms, which have developed supply chain management models.Data which is gathered in conclusion of the study and from informal meetings with budget and firm management; It is proven that by implementing supply chain management model to a different firm, the firms production is inclined to work in a simple and efficient manner that concentrates primarily on customer expectations. Problems, which arise during idea generation and implementation, are taken into consideration and solutions for these problems have been found.
