New method for evaluating intestinal motility: Acoustic gastrointestinal surveillance

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical relevance of the intestinal motility and the intestinal motility, which can be an objective evaluation method to change daily surgery practice in the postoperative period. Methods: This study includes a progressive experimental research method. "Gastrointestinal Activity Monitoring Device" developed in cooperation with Cukurova University Biomedical Engineering Department has been used to daily record (5-7 days) bowel activity for 10 minutes on patients who undergone colorectal surgery over the age of 18 years. By analyzing the obtained sound recordings in a computer environment; activity ratios of POI - (n: 20), POI + (n: 12) and control (n: 20) groups were examined in the relation among oral intake, gas and stool removal times. Results: The mean intestinal activity of the groups was also determined as 0.20act/s, 0.14 act/s and 0.08act/s for healthy (people), POI- and POI+ groups, respectively. There was a significant difference in activity among the groups (p <0,01). The threshold value (0.12 act/sec) was determined in terms of the number of healthy and postoperative patients. Oral intake of patients with activity above the threshold was allowed. POI group was found to increase the mean number of activities and tolerated oral intake as postoperative days progressed (p <0,05). In the POI group, the mean number of activities was found to be 0,14 ± 0,04 act/s at postoperative 2nd day, and the mean regimen day started 3 ± 0,9 days and stool output was 2 ± 1,3 days. According to the results of the listening, the patients who were above the threshold were found to tolerate to oral intake. There was no relationship between the presence of intestinal activity and the first gas and first stool output in the study (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Since there is no standardized approach for postoperative monitoring of intestinal motility, the gastrointestinal acoustic activity monitoring device may represent a clinically accessible approach to monitoring the noninvasive recovery of intestinal function. Gastrointestinal activity has reached the conclusion that the follow-up device can not be sufficient on its own about how a postoperative patient can be fed or fed, but it is of great benefit to using the records obtained in clinical decisions as an objective parameter.
