Effects of intravenous sodium bicarbonate therapy on survival of rat model that had been exposured to intragastric hydrochloric acid ingestion

INTRODUCTIONAccidental or suisidal corrosive intoxications are a serious source of mortality in our country. From the corrosives these one that have acid content, cause in a short time serious systemic effects. The most important systemic effect is metabolic acidosis. In the emergency department rooms this state of metabolic acidosis that develops in a short time and threatens life, ought to be treated and corrected rapidly and aggressively. In our study we aim to investicate the effects of sodium bicarbonate therapy on survival of rat model that had been exposured to intragastric hydrochloric acid.MATERIAL and METHODIn our study we used 19 wistar albino femele rat under Ketamine and Xylazine anesthesia. After we performed dissection to neck area of the five rats of the sham group we gave % 18 hydrochloric acid with the cannula that we inserted in to the esophagus. We took arterial blood samples and performed blood gases before and after of 20, 40 and 140 minute that we gave the solution. We saw the development of metabolic acidosis and we finished the observation in the 150th minute. We repeated the same procedures on the other groups. In the 20th minute after we performed blood gases we gave % 0,9 sodium Cl to seven rats of one group and sodium bicarbonate to seven rats of the other group through intravenous line. We took arterial blood samples and performed blood gases in the 40th and 140th minutes. Death times of the rats that died before the observation had been completed were recorded. In the 150th minute of the experiment we discontinued the observation and the study.RESULTSAfter we developed metabolic acidosis by giving % 18 hydrochloric acid five rats of the sodium bicarbonate group and one rat of the control group died before observational time?s completion . This result was found statistically significant (p=0.025 ).DISCUSSIONIn our study intravenous sodium bicarbonate therapy did not prolonge the life time of the rats. When we compered with the control group there were more deaths in the sodium bicarbonate group.
