The effect of music listening on pain, anxiety, basic life findings, patient satisfaction and surgery patients in patients with intravitreal injection

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of music intervention which was applied before the intravitreal injection (IVTI) and during-IVTI periods, on patients' anxiety, the pain perception, physiological variables, satisfaction of the IVTI procedure, and patient's cooperation with surgeon. The study is a randomized controlled trial. The study was conducted with a total of three groups: two intervention (Before-IVTI (Group1) and During-IVTI music intervention group (Group 2)) and a control group. The patients' anxiety was evaluated by using the VAS anxiety scale, experienced pain by using the VAS pain scale; patient's cooperation with surgeon by using the Numeric Rating Scale; and patient satisfaction of IVTI procedure by using a single question which 5-point Likert-type. The anxiety and pain values were lower in the intervention groups than control group (p1< 0.001). When the VAS pain values of all three groups straight after the injection and 15 minutes after that the values for all the groups was low. There was significant difference between two values of Group-2 (p2=0.009). There was a significantly higher values (p<0.001) of patient's cooperation with surgeon, patient satisfaction level of IVTI and preference rate of music intervention on possible future IVTI of the patients in intervened group than the control group. The results of this study suggest that the music intervention for patients undergoing IVTI has positive effects on patients' anxiety, the perception of pain, patient's cooperation with surgeon, and patient satisfaction of IVTI procedure. Therefore we recommend using music intervention with patients before and during the IVTI procedure.
