Abstract (EN)

Both exogenous radical processes and endogenous radicals that produced as part of a metabolic process lead to many metabolic disorders in living systems. Our bodies have antioxidant systems which tolerate the action of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. This antioxidant system is in equilibrium with oxidants. The imbalance between radicals and antioxidants can cause irreversible damage in essential cell structure that called oxidative stress. Antioxidant mechanisms eliminate the damage of free radicals. The main purpose of this study is determining antioxidant activities of water and ethanol extracts that obtained from the leaves of Inula graveolens (L.) Desf. species grown in Turkey. Antioxidant activities of extracts were determined according to the DPPH, FRAP and CUPRAC methods and the results were compared with BHA, BHT and ascorbic acide which are used as standard antioxidants. Also, phenolic composition of Inula graveolens (L.) Desf. determined by UHPLC-MS methods. According to the result, many polyphenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, hyperoside and protocatechuic acid were detected. The antioxidant capacity of Inula graveolens (L.) Desf. is associated with the presence of phenolic compounds, which react with the free radicals formed during the oxidation process Keywords: Free radicals, antioxidants, Inula graveolens (L.) Desf
