Investigation of high school students' financial literacy in terms of several variables

The aim of this study is to examine the financial literacy of high school students according to their personal characteristics, academic backgrounds and financial experiences. This study is a survey research and Causal-Comparative Research model was applied. The research data were obtained from 669 high school students attending ninth grade and twelfth grade at Ataşehir being district of İstanbul in 2015-2016 academic term. Financial Literacy Scale for High School Students was used as a data acquisition tool. Means and standard deviations were calculated for determining the level of financial literacy and t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted to determine the differentiations according to gender, socioeconomic backgrounds, high school types, grade, mathematics score, CGPA and personal financial experience variables. Pearson correlation was used to examine the relationship between success and financial literacy. When the data were analyzed, it was seen that there was a high, positive and significant correlation between income levels and financial literacy level. In addition, the findings of this study show that seniors are higher than freshmen in financial literacy. The students in Anatolian high school have higher financial literacy scores than the other type high school students. Positive and significant correlations were found in low level between students' CGPA, math course score and financial literacy level. Finally, students' financial literacy differentiated according to financial guidance of their family and personal financial experiences.
