Abstract (EN)
This thesis studies the role of building large within the context of repetition and shrinking in size of units in housing. A brief history of larger structures is investigated, in relation with trends and timeline, to clarify their role and impact on urban settlements along with cultural, political and management dynamism. The Industrial Revolution and Modernism have transformed the city by introducing new building types of larger structures and by re-centering the City, to place of work, followed by the place of residential. With altered building techniques that led to new set of aesthetics the traditional city was being transformed. The political and economic influence with the post war problems of urgent Affordable Housing need, large housing structures were designed by architects. Since, many terms for explanatory have been outlined and used to study large structures. The connection with urban fabric is one of the focus points of the study. Building large is noted for creating detachment in the scale of the float which results in the loss of public realm. Gated communities are being highlighted for breaking the float of urban tissue further. Besides the journey of building large and housing in other countries, the journey and the transformation of Turkish housing in relation to cultural alteration with political reforms and law enforcements are studied. There are four periods of housing in Turkey examined. Building large and tall showed a growth especially after 1990's in Turkey in housing sector. Istanbul is the city containing highest volumetric urbanism and the district of Kadıköy that contains both new and historical fabric of housing with large regeneration area is studied along with building tall, through researching available flats for sale and rent on housing market. Sahibinden.com's widely used research engine is enriched and the mass housing typology with tall structures of these areas with neighborhoods are identified to study the unit sizes in relation with the volume of mass, covering the features of repetition and shrinking in size. The phenomenon of going larger and taller (in terms of volume) while getting smaller (units) lies at the center of this study.
