Postmodern transformation of irony and irony in postmodern ceramic works of art

We observe that the concept of irony revealed the unity of art and philosophy since its emergence with Socrates, and that it earned a new face to literature, theatre, plastic arts, painting, sculpture and ceramic. The development of the concept in time and its becoming a subject of the agenda as a word play can be easily distinguished especially over theatre and literature. On the other hand, in the art of painting, it is characteristics existence since long time ago.The pioneering artists of this period Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marc Chagal, Georges Braque, Paul Gauguin, Cobra Group and Fernard Leger did not regard ceramic as a material, but they rather considered it as a means of artistic expression. This development is an important contribution to the artistic transformation of ceramic.Particularly, the ceramic sculptures of Paul Gauguin provide a starting point in terms of usage of irony concept in the ceramic art. Another important name is Marcel Duchamp in that he contributed both to the emergence of Postmodern Art and also to the new artistic productions. The ceramic art and artists harmonized with the art and aesthetics of the 1960s bear the features of many contemporary tendency, while their attitude are often ironic. As in many works of art which are defined as ironic, the ceramic artists of postmodern period reflected the impediments, perversions, dilemmas and all features of the period in the form of an ironic and critical rebellion.This thesis study titled as `Postmodern Transformation of Irony and Irony in Postmodern Ceramic Works of Art? includes a comprehensive research on the concept of irony. Many artists and their works where irony is used in areas such as Literature, Theatre, Painting and Sculpture have been presented with samples. As for the art of ceramic, which is the main part of the study, the study starts with the development process in Modern Art, and continues with the discussing of various tendencies in the art of ceramic in an ironic discourse with the using of irony in the concept of Postmodern Art, and is concluded with the analysis of artists and their works in terms of irony.
