The mediating role of glass ceiling perception in the effect of work-family conflict on occupational burnout: A research in accommodation enterprises

This study aims to examine the relationship between work-family conflict, occupational burnout, and glass ceiling perceptions among women working in the tourism sector. Specifically, the study investigates whether the difficulties women face in balancing their work lives and family responsibilities are associated with occupational burnout and the glass ceiling syndrome. The research seeks to uncover how the stress stemming from work-family conflict among female employees in the tourism sector affects their levels of burnout, and whether glass ceiling perceptions play a mediating role in this effect. The research was conducted with the participation of 387 female employees working in accommodation establishments in Bodrum and Kuşadası. In this research, the survey method was used as one of the quantitative analysis methods and data was collected with a five-point Likert scale. The relationships between the variables were examined by performing confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis. The sample size was determined according to the KMO value and the Cronbach Alpha coefficient was determined as > 0.7 in the reliability test. As a result of this research, it was shown that work-family conflict has a significant effect on the occupational burnout of female employees and that the glass ceiling perception strengthens this relationship, and it was also seen that the glass ceiling perception has a mediating effect in the relationship between work-family, family-work conflict and burnout. This study presents important findings regarding issues faced by women in the tourism sector, focusing on work-family balance, occupational burnout, and the glass ceiling syndrome. The research emphasizes the need for more flexible working conditions and supportive policies for women's career development as strategies to address these challenges.
