Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to examine the classical tafsīr work titled Hulāsat al-Tafāsīr, attributed to Ishāq b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan, within the framework of the Qur'anic sciences (ʿulūm al-Qurʾān). Although the work is classified as a concise (muḫtaṣar) tafsīr, it covers a wide range of Qur'anic sciences and thus offers significant scholarly value. It addresses various key topics such as variant readings (qirāʾāt), occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), abrogation (naskh), difficult and ambiguous expressions (mushkil and mubham), rare vocabulary (gharīb al-Qurʾān), and grammatical analysis (iʿrāb al-Qurʾān). In this respect, the work can be considered not only a tafsīr but also a practical example of Qur'anic sciences. In the thesis, the limited available information regarding the author's life and scholarly background is first presented, followed by an analysis of the structure, content, and methodology of the tafsīr. The only explicitly cited source in the work is al-Wasīṭ, the tafsīr authored by Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-Wāḥidī (d. 468 AH / 1076 CE), which indicates a selective approach to referencing. Nonetheless, certain interpretations found in the text bear remarkable resemblance to the views of prominent classical exegetes such as Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310 AH / 923 CE), Maḥmūd b. ʿUmar al-Zamakhsharī (d. 538 AH / 1144 CE), Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606 AH / 1210 CE), and Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Bayḍāwī (d. 685 AH / 1286 CE). These similarities suggest that although the author does not explicitly reference these works, he was likely familiar with the exegetical tradition they represent and operated within a comparable intellectual framework. Furthermore, the author's command of Arabic linguistic sciences is evidenced by his direct references to renowned grammarians such as ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān Sībawayh (d. 180 AH / 796 CE) and Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā b. Ziyād al-Farrāʾ (d. 207 AH / 822 CE). The third chapter of the thesis is devoted to the evaluation of the tafsīr in terms of Qur'anic sciences, where each major topic is examined with selected examples from the work. Through these analyses, the author's approach in balancing transmitted knowledge (riwāyah) and rational interpretation (dirāyah) is revealed. Comparative references to other tafsīrs are also included where relevant, providing insights into the possible sources and exegetical methodology of the author. One of the most distinctive aspects of this study is that it presents the first comprehensive evaluation of Hulāsat al-Tafāsīr within the context of Qur'anic sciences. The absence of previous scholarly research dealing with the work from this perspective increases the originality and academic value of the thesis. In this regard, the study contributes both to the rediscovery of a neglected classical tafsīr and to the applied understanding of ʿulūm al-Qurʾān through a historical text.
