Last five-year prevalence of campylobacter jejuni in diarrhea stool specimens (2015-2019)

Campylobacter jejuni is one of the important pathogenic microorganisms causing bascterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Campylobacter gastroenteritis appears as an acute and self-limiting infection usually associated with symptoms of fever, abdominal pain and watery/ bloody diarrhea lasting only a few days. Rarely, it may present with severe and prolonged cases that may be associated with bacteremia and extraintestinal infections. Altough it is frequently observed as sporpdic cases, water and food-borne Campylobacter jejuni outbreaks are also observed. İncreasing resistance in Campylobacter isolates to these antibiotics, which are widely used for therapeutic purposes worldwide, may cause failures in the empirical treatment of these infections. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni in stool samples with diarrhea in the Central Labaratory of Dokuz Eylül Üniversity Medical Faculty Hospital and to have information about the seasonal distribution, age and gender group affected by these pathogenic microorganism infections, which have an important place among the agents of acute gastroenteritis.
