Abstract (EN)
The general purpose of this research is to be investigated of the strategies used for vocabulary development at the vocational education of hearing impaired university students. The participants of the research are ten hearing impaired first year university students attending to Graphic Art Department of School For The Handicapped, Anadolu University; the researcher, the instructor responsible for the vocational class and thesis supervisors.The research has been done at three periods such as `Preparatory Process?, `Practicing Process? and `Enrichment Process?. Preparatory and Practicing Process are done on Formal Education, but Enrichment Process is done in internet. Research data, video teyp records, voice records and meeting records of validity committee, lesson plans and reflecting evaluation are formed of students products and test results aimed determining the levels of vocabulary development. Obtained data as cycling are analyzed with several analysis techniques during research and final. Data have regularly been examined by thesis observing committee.During the education done with the Parallel Discipline Model out of Interdisciplinary Models, a model has been emerged about developing vocational vocabulary development of the hearing impaired students. Indirect and direct vocabulary development strategies have been applied with the features of preparing atmosphere where learned words have meaningfully been used and words have sufficiently been repeated in meaningful context, newly learned words have sufficiently been completed with the former knowledge which forms the basis of developing effective vocabulary development.The research findings have indicated that hearing impaired university students have benefited from the interdisciplinary models where vocational and language lessons are organized together in being taught the vocational vocabulary. The strategies of asking questions to improve hearing impaired students? vocabulary development, fill in the blanks an guessing the meaning of the word related to the text context have been used as indirect vocabulary development. With the same purpose defining, giving the synonym of the word, teaching the vocabulary developing strategies directly, using the graphic organizers and developing vocabulary have been used in this research as directly vocabulary development strategies. Describing word and asking question have become the most used vocabulary developing strategies. Direct and indirect vocabulary developing strategies have been applied together during the lessons, and it has been determined that it has helped the students learn the vocational vocabulary. It has also been determined that hearing impaired students have benefited from formal education more than education on internet.
