The examination of parent guadiance process of a family having a child with hearing loss

The main purpose of this action research is to examine the parent guidance process of a family having a child with a hearing loss. The participants of the research are the child with a hearing loss, her mother and the teacher/ researcher. The data were collected by the videotape recordings of parent guadiance sessions, audio recordings of interviews with the mother, audio recordings of evaluation and trustworthines meetings after the sessions and reflective journals. Ten parent guidance sessions have been conducted for research purposes. A general transcription of all of the parent guidance sessions was performed and inductive analyses have been applied to the data in order to examine the parent guidance process. The trustworthiness of this research has been provided by evaluating the sessions with the supervisor who is experienced in the field and another academic who also has a long term experience in working with children with hearing loss and conducting action research. The data has been confirmed in the review and trustworthiness meetings and a new action plan has been emerged as a result of it. The teacher/rerearcher has planned and applied the next sessions according to this plan. During the research process this application cycle has continued systematically. The findings of this research have indicated that the parent guidance sessions has the phases of preparation, application and evaluation. The activities that are appropriate to the age and progress of the child have been used so as to create an effective communication atmosphere during the sessions. The teacher/reseacher aimed that mother would gain the strategies supporting the child's language development by providing the mother's active particapation to the sessions throughout the games. It has been observed that positive changes have been occured in the mother's attitudes supporting the child's development and the teacher's/reseacher's practicing skills.
